When kids are sick, it is truly the worst. For starters, kids can’t really communicate with you how they feel, because they don’t know. And they don’t know how to explain it.
As a parent, a lot of stuff involves guesswork, and when it comes to the kids being sick, it’s no different. So usually if the kids are feeling miserable, the culprit is a sore throat. Every time a bug makes its way into our household, it seems to go straight for my kids’ throats.
Firstly, let’s just talk about what causes a sore throat: Allergies, dry air, and outdoor pollution, as well as illnesses like the common cold, flu, measles, chickenpox, mononucleosis (mono), and croup, In other words, a lot (and most) of the illnesses are viral infections that will not respond to antibiotics.
The thing with kids is, unfortunately, you can’t really give them anything strong – other than Pamol, or Ibuprofen. So because I’m now well experienced in the art of easing sore throats, I have put together this list of my winners:

Liquids
Lots of fluids are essential to help your child recover from any illness, and to help ease a sore throat. Sometimes when kids are sick, the last thing they feel like drinking is water – and that’s ok. There are plenty of other options too:
- Warm water with lemon & honey
- Juice
- Flat lemonade
- Chicken Soup
Every time your child has a drink, it will give them a little energy and also help to thin any mucus that is lingering around.

Comvita Manuka Honey Lozenges
My Mum actually introduced me to Comvita Lozenges and Lollipops and they are truly amazing. The Comvita Manuka Honey Lozenges come in three flavours: Lemon & Honey, Cool Mint and Aniseed. My kids’ favourite is definitely the Lemon & Honey, and I am quite partial to the Cool Mint.
The Comvita Manuka Honey Lozenges combine the soothing qualities of UMF Manuka Honey with the power of Propolis.

Comvita Children’s Honey & Lemon Lollipops
These are by FAR the best invention ever – Winter Wellness Lollipops! And my kids ABSOLUTELY LOVE THEM! Comvita Children’s Lemon and Honey Lollipops combine UMF Manuka Honey with Propolis – similar to the Lozenges. However, they are a lollipop! GENIUS!

Cooling Foods
Ice Blocks, cold fruit (peaches, oranges, etc) and ice cream are great for helping to soothe a sore throat. Not to mention it gives your kids a wee bit of energy (which they might be lacking if they haven’t been eating), and might make them feel a little less miserable.

Please, if you are concerned at all about your child’s health, do not hesitate to visit your GP or the A&E. It never hurts to be on the safe side with especially when it comes to children!
